EDF Energy is one of the largest energy companies in the UK. We generate around 6% of the UK's electricity, employ nearly 12,000 people and deliver electricity to 7.9 million customer homes and businesses through our public networks.

EDF Energy is a wholly owned subsidiary of the EDF Group, one of Europe's largest energy groups.

We supply 5.5 million customers nationally throughout the UK. The largest concentration of our customers is in London, the south east and the south west of England. During 2006, we were the largest electricity supplier in the UK to large industrial and commercial companies.

We own and manage the distribution networks covering London, the south east and east of England and operate coal- and gas-fired power stations which together provide the majority of the electricity we produce. In addition we operate private combined heat and power plants and windfarms.

We are among the largest private network operators in the UK, having long-term contracts with BAA's Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, the London Underground and Canary Wharf.

The company is organised into three branches:

• Customers Branch sells energy to our residential, SME and business customers
• Energy Branch manages our electricity generating portfolio and purchases electricity and gas in the energy wholesale markets
• Networks Branch runs a centre of excellence for the development, construction and operation of power networks

The Sustainable Future Project was announced in June 2006 as a logical development in our systematically embedding corporate responsibility into the way we run our business. The project is the focal point for co-ordinating our collective business response to the big social and environmental challenges facing us - issues such as climate change, affordability and security of supply. We aim to embed tackling these issues into the heart of how we do business and in a way which clearly differentiates us from our competitors. This approach will help turn these challenges into genuine business opportunities which can be used to help grow the business.
